Capital Outlay and Lighting Upgrade Proposal Help

The email from the administration has gone out – capital outlay requests are now open. You know your theatrical spaces need an update, but what should you ask for and, most importantly – how? We’ve compiled these key facts and steps to take to help you with your proposal:

Step 1: Explain the Why

Helping your admin understand the “why” you are asking for a lighting upgrade is a great way to lay the foundation for your request.

  • Are there other schools in your district with more advanced lighting than yours? Equity is a big deal in public education, so alerting your admin to this inequity will help them understand exactly what and why you are asking for expensive equipment

  • If your district is equal in all equipment, take a broader look at neighboring programs. Specifically ones at the same conference as you. For example: what do other 5A schools in your area have?

Step 2: Explain the What

No need to go into specifics about each individual lighting instrument. Give a broad description about the lighting equipment you’re asking for and how it would benefit your students. Stumped on the wording? Feel free to use our template below!

Intelligent Lights, also called movers, are computer-controlled lighting fixtures that can be programmed to move and change color, pattern, and intensity. Non-moving fixtures, such as LED cyc lights create high intensity, saturated colors without the use of costly lighting gel. By incorporating these fixtures into our program, students can benefit from:

  1. Enhanced Creativity: With the advanced capabilities of these fixtures, students will be able to create more sophisticated and dynamic lighting designs, expanding their design skills. In the classroom setting, students learning to use these fixtures will incorporate cross-curricular skills including color-mixing and geometry.

  2. Efficient Use of Resources: Movers and LED fixtures are energy-efficient and can replace multiple traditional lighting fixtures. Though the purchase price can be high, the long-term savings to the district through energy consumption will ultimately save the district money.

  3. College Ready: These style of fixtures are standard in college programs and professional settings. Being able to offer this level of technology to our students will prepare them for the technical theatre industry and even computer programming.

Step 3: Don’t Forget the How

We’re here to help you find the best lighting fixtures for your space and help you prepare a quote. We can give you a range of options that can help you stay within budget requirements. Most importantly, we can set you and your students up for success by creating a custom user interface that makes programming much more accessible and allows the directors to focus their time elsewhere.
